The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) secretariat, in Namibia has acknowledged the existence and circulation of fraudulent certificates.
“KP Participants have occasionally been confronted with the occurrence of fraudulent KP certificates,” it said in a statement.
It said to protect the scheme against the use of fraudulent or counterfeit KP certificates, there was need for buyers to carefully examine the certificates or contact authorities, in case of reasonable doubt regarding the authenticity of the certificates. KP said it was also necessary for buyers and traders to coordinate and exchange information on certificates, as well as keep records of allegations of fraudulent or counterfeit certificates.
Trade in rough diamonds is only allowed between participants of KP on the basis of valid certificates.
