De Beers: Strike Would Affect Production, Salary Incentive Schemes

22.07.2008

De Beers SA, the world's largest producer of diamonds, Monday said a strike planned by about 3,400 workers at its mines in South Africa would affect production as well as employees who benefit from an incentive scheme, RAPAPORT reported.
The Johannesburg company said members of the National Union of Mineworkers plan to strike after the union rejected an offer of an 11 percent wage increase this year, sticking with its demand for a 13.5 percent hike.
"De Beers is disappointed that NUM believes its purposes might be better served by embarking on industrial action," the company said, adding that it was open to continuing discussions with the union. De Beers, which is majority-owned by Anglo American PLC has six mines in South Africa.
